Educating yourself and observing!

There’s so much to learn, so much to contribute to, so much to stand up for and so much to shun. It’s only right that we educate ourselves and observe the world around us. This will be such an advantage to our individual selves and the world.

These days, there are a lot of movements and activism on different things. Yeah, because movements most times serve as a catalyst for change.

I found that whenever I heard about a movement or trend, and just had bits of information on what it was about, sometimes at the initial point, I strongly affirm that movement.

I feel like I’m all in. And then somehow, along the line, I start to have my reservations, my personal biases about that movement/trend.

Whether it is because I start to think alot about that thing (and you know, sometimes you think so much about something and then start to confuse yourself. Your thinking then becomes unfruitful), or that the people I would naturally look up to just have different opinions about that thing.

And so alot of times, I decide, “okay let me just keep it to myself that I have reservations about this movement so I don’t seem unprogressive to people”

Here’s what I’m learning these days:

I’m learning that it is really in my place and your place to educate ourselves on things.

For example, when I started been more conscious about feminism, I’d tell you “I support the message feminism gives out and what it stands for. You know, I support equality. And that’s it! Why don’t we just name it Equality because ‘Feminism’ sounds like special treatment?. Maybe if we named it Equality, it would taper down the unnecessary bitterness non-feminists have against feminists”.

So I started to read more about feminism and I would watch videos of Chimamanda Adichie and other feminists speak about feminism, I also kept seeing the injustices played out in society against women.

And I learnt these simple things; Feminism is a movement for the fair treatment of women in society, it is a movement supporting equality of both sexes. Every movement must have a name, you have to name a problem. It’s one of the first steps to solving an issue. First, you acknowledge that this thing is a problem, you give it an unfiltered and straightforward name. Meaning; you call it what it is.

I also realized that the fact that I had an uncertainty meant I did not fully understand what the movement was really about, it meant that I had never truly been knowledgeable about it. So it was necessary to educate myself.

Understanding these things solved my questions and gave me a clearer picture.

This is not a message on feminism, LOL.

It’s just me saying, it’s normal as humans to have our biases or reservations on things, but mostimes that happens because we lack in-depth knowledge on those things.

We haven’t decided to really open our minds and educate ourselves on things, and also learn from people.

So today, instead of being ignorant on certain issues and being comfortable with ignorance. Instead of hiding our ignorance and choosing to not say anything all the time, let’s educate ourselves on these issues, observe the world around us and spread knowledge.

I’d really like to hear our thoughts on today’s discuss!

*What do you think about today’s thought? What contributions do you have to give? What are those doubts and biases we have on issues that we like to keep to ourselves? Let’s share it! Maybe your uncertainties will be cleared by someone today!*

The End
